Corporate vs. Personal Branding: Choosing the Right One
By Robert Speyer of Web Success Team
When it comes to marketing and branding a business, choosing the right image is essential. But have you ever thought about personal branding and how it can help you and your company? Personal branding is another way to market your business and is easier than corporate branding. By marketing yourself as an expert in your field, your business becomes more accessible to a consumer by turning it into a human face. Take LifeLock, an identity theft protection company, for example. The first thing you see on the website is LifeLock’s CEO, Todd Davis and his Social Security Number declaring his confidence in the company and thereby giving LifeLock a human face to relate to. However you want to be more than just the face of your business, you want to be the expert, the best person for your industry. Believe in yourself and remain consistent The first step to making your name a brand is to have a defined image. This is your credibility we are talking about now. Believe in yourself and your talents. In a way, this makes personal branding a lot easier than corporate because you are your brand. The hard part lies in consistency and voice. You do not want to low-ball your marketing budget because you are branding yourself; there is still work to be done! Understand that any brand, corporate or personal, must be strong and clearly portray what it is and what it is not. Once you have this established, it is vital that your chosen brand and image remains consistent otherwise credibility goes out the window. This does not mean that you can never change your image, only that you need to be consistent with the image you have chosen. For example, don’t market yourself as a programmer when you are a web designer. Have a clear message and send it out. Use other online marketing tools to help put your name on the map of your industry. Write blogs, submit to article directories and join social networks. You want to prove to your consumers that you are serious by demonstrating your expertise through various forms of media. Keep in mind that you are building a reputation for your brand and business, which boils down to YOU.
